Ugly Boy Flutes

G4 Quilted Maple tuned to A430 (Mozart’s preferred tuning). I let flutes tell me where they want to land, tone- wise, and this one was it, hands down. GO TO CHIMNEY ROCK FLUTES LINK… guessing it sold long ago
B3 A432 in lightly figured Mahogany, with natural ‘gator’ piece of found wood, on Walnut base.Lightly staggered finger holes for L over R players. $340
F4 in heavily spalted Tamarind from India. Possibly THE most gorgeous, intense patterened wood I’ve ever worked with. Bird is out of Apricot wood. (click to enlarge!) ADOPTED!
While this board was gorgous before I created this flute, what was hidden as I carved and shaped away the excess wood was beyond my wildest expectations. However, this wood required a great amount of stabilizing with multiple coats of Butcher Block Oil, and I mean on the order of eight or more, allowing for a couple of curing and drying days in the process. Too, in planing the pieces for gluing, the gorgeous gray end chipped off some small pieces, which is why the foot of the flute is irregular - I left it as-is. I finished it off with gloss wipe-on poly, which accentuates the patterns and seals this kid for lifetimes to come. I now have more boards of this unusual wood, which will require the same amount of stabilization, but it will be worth the effort and $ as I can get to it.
